The Tragedy – 2016
Lester/Lund (Gabriel Lester, Jonas Lund)
Mechanical iris diaphragm
Ø 980mm

An eye, a mouth, an anus –  or everything at once? The movement of the iris forms an imitation and interpretation of the spectrum of online expressions regarding the course of events in De Appel Arts Centre during the past twelve months. By collecting various data from online platforms and forums, the iris visualises an online world of observations, opinions and emotions. In the middle of a desire for openness and the complexity of a situation lies an extended area of mixed feelings and speculations.

The work of Jonas Lund always relates to the mechanisms of present day art, both in the institutional as well as the commercial sphere. The collaboration between Lund and Lester began as part of a pilot program of the Mondriaan Foundation, whereby the upcoming artist receives subsidies to assist a so-called mid-career artist. During one year, Lund and Lester worked on exhibitions and online interventions. The most memorable were the weeks they spent in the Abrons Art Centre, an off-Broadway theatre in New York where the artists made the Super Sargasso Sea performance for the Performa Biannual. This phantom theatre piece,  without actors, but exclusively made up of decor, light and sound, formes a prelude to the work Bermuda, exhibited in Zaal D.
