A Man of Action (all episodes)
1999 – ongoing
Super8 film transferred to HD-video
The performance series Man of Action combines pantomime and magic into a single, new and phantasmic dimension of illusionism. By mimicking magic tricks, recognizable movements and gestures become reduced to relative action. The works take as starting point a passage from Dostoyevsky’s Notes from Underground, in which Dostoyevsky recounts that mankind’s move to become ever more civilized has resulted in every human action being judged in an attempt to determine its benefits. Nonetheless, the desire to act without reason, to act out of sheer impulse or instinct remains deep within everyone. A Man of Action has thus far been performed in Iceland, Peru, Sinai, Netherlands, Egypt, and China.
