Kaufhaus Incidentals
2012
The Ives Ensemble, a collection of silent movie soundtracks written for film scenes of contemplation, speakers with which to play the work
Exhibited at: dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel
Curated by: Raimundas Malasauskas, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev

Created for dOCUMENTA (13), Kaufhaus Incidentals—Music for Department Stores is a sound project at SinnLeffers, the department store situated next to the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel. Research centered on a silent film score database gathered between 2011 and 2012, led me to discover approximately twenty compositions listed at the Amsterdam Film Museum and the MOMA archive in New York under the category “thoughts.” These compositions are presumably used to underscore scenes in silent films of actors’ thinking, pondering, plotting, conniving, or daydreaming. This discovery inspired a recording of music for thoughts—16 tracks selected by John Snijders and myself—which were then arranged by John and recorded by the Ives Ensemble and installed inside and outside of SinnLeffers.
