This was recently send to me by my longtime friend Herwig Weiser. Wim Jongedijk was also part of this little action. I am the hooded actor. We filmed it on one of the dikes near where I grew up. As far as I can remember, the film became part of a set-up of several films for the concert tour of Mouse on Mars. This is possibly one of my first documented performances.

Gabriel Lester’s lecture titled TimeSpace, a term indicating the three dimensions of space supplemented with the fourth dimension of time,will focus on his spatial installations. These artworks, resembling cinematic stage sets, architectural design and interior settings,strongly suggest movement and dramatic evolution. Recognizing life asprogressions through time and space, the lecture will also addressnarrative structures, the constitution of memory and a psychology ofspace.

About the Artist
Gabriel Lester (b. Amsterdam 1972) started his artistic endeavor as amusician, stumbled into literature, studied cinema and finally becamea visual artist. Lester’s many interests and expertise’s explain thethemes, methods and nature of his present artwork. Most of his filmsand spatial installations have an implicit narrative layer, strongcinematicinfluences, sequential constructions and an obvious sense ofrhythm.

There will be a Dutch focus this year at Arco Madrid – the so called Dutch Assembly. For this I will show a new conveyor-belt work, the reviewed and improved edit of The Big One (2010) . Furthermore, I will host the auction of Kunstverein the 17th of February and co-host a radio program on the 18th, together with Juha van het Zelfde. Image shows “The Physical Expression of Potential” boxed up and ready to be shipped to Madrid. The work will be on show at galerie Fons Welters.

Gabriel Lester’s lecture titled TimeSpace, a term indicating the three dimensions of space supplemented with the fourth dimension of time, will focus on his artworks from a perception of spatial movement and time-based compositions. Observing the world as a progressions through time and space, the lecture will address an evolution of artistic ideas and experiences related to the creation of narrative structures and fundamentally static installation suggesting motion.

As of today, my site has been slightly remixed and refreshed. So I took out some selected projects, which I belief suit the highlight better. As a first move, updated documentation of Highlight (the work). This exhibition was installed at the BOZAR (former PSK/PBA) in Brussels. It combines my first periscope sculpture, designed together with Onco Tattje, and the architectural spines chased with a 1 cm wide mirror line. All in all there is about a kilometer of mirror lines stuck onto the walls, steps and pillars, creating a dynamic drawing into and onto the monumental space.

Melancholia in Arcadia (in memory of my dear friend) – 2011

For I AM NOT A STUDIO ARTIST the first show at the new Istanbul art center SALT (formerly know as Platform Garanti), I was asked by curator Vasif Kortun to propose a work in memory of artist Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (Ankara, 1957 – Istanbul, 2007). Hüseyin and I had become friends in 2002 when I first exhibited in Istanbul and stayed in frequent contact, planning works and collaborations, until his tragic death in 2007. Our time in Stockholm in 2003, at IASPIS, where we teamed up with New Zealand born curator Simon Rees, is especially memorable for all the hedonistic exploits we shared. Researching the works of Hüseyin, which have been well documented and archived by SALT, I came across a series of photo’s depicting lace curtains blowing in the wind titeled Melancholia in Arcadia. The series of photo’s set in several corridors inside what seems to be an abandoned school, immediately fascinated me. I was struck by the frozen movements and cinematographic quality of the sequence. It reminded me of how, when my grandfather died, according to tradition, we had to open the curtains to let his soul out. Knowing how, when one thinks there is a ghost about, one usually notices a curtain swaying, as if set to motion by a passing soul, I decided crate an installation of frozen curtains, forever blowing in the wind. Technically this project turned out to be very delicate, so although the pictures posted here show the work as it was intended to be, I am not sure how the work looks today…

The Future Chasing Past the Present – 2010

These scale models were glued to a conveyor-belt together with models of trees and figues. The entire collection was shipped to London and exhibited at the Frieze art fair last week. Today a homage to the 205 models and Marco Giacomelli who worked on each of them.
